Ever since 2010, I have been making Franenberry Treats.
There is something so amazing about Frankenberry cereal, and the fact that my local Target has it in stores every October makes making Frankenberry treats a special occasion that I look forward to every year.
Before I was vegan, I would just mindlessly buy a box of cereal, marshmallows, and butter and make 1-2 batches every Halloween.
Last year, I thought my love of Frankberry treats would be over. Fortunately, anything can be made vegan.
Frankenberry cereal actually is vegan, except there are some marshmallows mixed in. All I do is remove them. Some may be concerned about cross-contamination. Personally, I only worry about eating something that is directly from an animal product. I don’t worry about “traces” if that makes any sense. If you don’t like that the cereal was touching marshmallows, by all means, feel free to skip out on this recipe. That’s entirely your decision.
As for marshmallows and butter, both Trader Joe’s an Whole Foods sell vegan marshmallows that taste pretty damn good. If you don’t understand why marshmallows are not vegan, it is because they contain gelatin, which is basically boiled bones. Yuck, I know.
Vegan marshmallows usually contain some form of seaweed product as a replacement to gelatin, and I honestly cannot tell a difference in taste or texture.
As for butter, I think we’ve all heard of Earth Balance.
Now, is this a healthy treat. My goodness, no!
However, it’s Halloween, and sometimes I just like to indulge and enjoy treats that remind me of simpler times. I can’t be alone, here.
Honestly, this is probably the easiest recipe of all time. If you know how to make homemade Rice Krispy treats, you know how to make Frankenberry treats. Still, here’s a recipe for my favorite Halloween treat of all time.
It isn’t as appealing as it used to be since it is so processed and is well…pure junk food. Still, I find this treat to be super nostalgic and is just something I have to make every single year. There are those traditions that you just can’t quit no matter how much you outgrow it. This is one of those for me.
If you love Frankenberry cereal as much as I do, and don’t want to give up Frankenberry treats just because you’re vegan now, don’t even worry about it. I’ve got you covered. You can stay vegan (I don’t know about you, but nothing will get me to stop being vegan, especially some fattening treat on Halloween) AND enjoy something from your childhood. Not everything is easy to veganize, but this sure is!
- 3 Tbsp vegan butter
- 1 10oz bag vegan marshmallows (I use Dandie's brand)
- 6 Cups Frankenberry cereal (marshmallows removed)
- 1. Heat a large pot on medium heat. Add vegan butter and melt. Add marshmallows and stir until marshmallows are fluffy and combined. Remove from heat
- 2. Once pot is removed from heat, pour in Frankenberry cereal and stir/toss. Mixture is sticky, so it may take a bit of time to fully combine the cereal and the marshmallow fluff. Once fully mixed, pour into medium baking pan. Let sit for one hour to set.
- 3. Cut Frankenberry treats into squares and serve! Best served within 48 hours.
